  3. Installing HoTMetaL PRO 4.0 Evaluation Version
  4. **********************************************

  6. Welcome to HoTMetaL PRO 4.0 Evaluation Version. This
  7. document has information on:
  8.     - System requirements
  9.     - Installing HoTMetaL PRO
  10.     - Un-installing and re-installing HoTMetaL PRO
  11.     - Possible installation problems
  12.

  15. After you have installed HoTMetaL PRO, see the file
  16. "readme.wri" and the HoTMetaL PRO online help for more
  17. product information. You can also consult SoftQuad's online
  18. Support Center, available from http://www.softquad.com/supportcenter

  21. System requirements
  22. -------------------
  23.  
  24. HoTMetaL PRO Evaluation runs under Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0.
  25. Your system must have the following, or higher:
  26. - 80486, 33MHz (Pentium recommended)
  27. - 16 MB RAM
  28. - Super VGA display, 256 colors, 640x480 resolution
  29.

  31. Installing HoTMetaL PRO 4.0 Evaluation Version
  32. ----------------------------------------------

  34. There were two options for downloading the HoTMetaL
  35. files over the Web. The steps for installing
  36. the product are different for each option.
  37.  
  38. Option 1: If you downloaded the product in one piece,
  39. then the file "hm4ev.exe" should be present on your system. 
  40.  
  41. Option 2: If you downloaded the product in six pieces,
  42. then the files "hm4ev_1.exe", "hm4ev_2.exe", ..., "hm4ev_6.exe"
  43. should be present on your system.
  44.  
  45. You will need approximately 20 Mb of temporary space
  46. in order to extract the temporary files from the archive(s),
  47. and another 40 Mb of free disk space in order to install 
  48. and use HoTMetaL PRO 4.0 Evaluation Version.
  49.  
  50. If you chose Option 1
  51. =====================
  52.  
  53. 1. Double click on "hm4ev.exe".
  54.  
  55. This will extract the HoTMetaL PRO files from the archive that
  56. you downloaded, and will start the HoTMetaL installer.
  57.  
  58. During this process, you will be asked to indicate the 
  59. Installation Directory (folder) into which the files should 
  60. be extracted. This is a temporary folder that you will delete 
  61. when the installation is complete.
  62.  
  63. 2. Follow the instructions given by the installer.
  64.  
  65. Note: if you already have HoTMetaL PRO 3.0, HoTMetaL Light 3.0,
  66. or HoTMetaL 3.0 Evaluation on your PC, *do not* install
  67. HoTMetaL PRO 4.0 Evaluation version in the same folder as
  68. any of these products.
  69.  
  70. 3. You can now delete the file "hm4ev.exe", and the temporary 
  71. installation folder and all the files and folders that 
  72. it contains. Before you do this, it is good idea to 
  73. make sure that the main components of HoTMetaL PRO (Editor, 
  74. Information Manager, and Site Maker) can be launched successfully.

  77. If you chose Option 2
  78. =====================
  79.  
  80. If you downloaded six files, carry out the following steps:
  81.  
  82. 1. Double-click on "hm4ev_1.exe".
  83.  
  84. This will extract part 1 of the HoTMetaL PRO files from the archive
  85. that you downloaded. 
  86.  
  87. During this process, you will be asked to enter the Installation 
  88. Directory (folder) into which the files should be extracted. 
  89. This is a temporary folder that you will delete when the 
  90. installation is complete.  
  91.  
  92. 2. After all files in part 1 have been extracted, the process automatically
  93. continues by extracting part 2 (hm4ev_2.exe) and so on.
  94.  
  95. Make sure to specify the *same* installation folder each time. 
  96.  
  97. You will get an error if:
  98.     - you have not downloaded all 6 files to begin with
  99.     (hmev4_1.exe .. hm4ev_6.exe)
  100.     - or if you did not start by extracting part 1 (hm4ev_1.exe).
  101.  
  102. You can easily correct this by downloading any missing files.
  103. Then start by extracting part 1 again (say "yes to all" to overwrite files
  104. that you extracted the first time.
  105.  
  106. 3. After you have extracted all six parts into the installation folder,
  107. go to the installation folder and double-click on "Setup.exe" to install.
  108.  
  109. 4. Follow the instructions given by the installer.
  110.  
  111. Note: if you already have HoTMetaL PRO 3.0, HoTMetaL Light 3.0,
  112. or HoTMetaL 3.0 Evaluation on your PC, *do not* install
  113. HoTMetaL PRO 4.0 Evaluation version in the same folder as
  114. any of these products.
  115.  
  116. 5. You can now delete the files "hm4ev_1.exe" through "hm4ev_6.exe",
  117. and the temporary installation folder and all the files and folders 
  118. that it contains. Before you do this, it is a good idea to make sure 
  119. that the main components of HoTMetaL PRO (Editor, Information Manager, 
  120. and Site Maker) can be launched successfully.

  122. Un-installing and re-installing
  123. ------------------------------- 
  124.

  126. To uninstall HoTMetaL PRO 4.0 Evaluation Version:
  127. 1. From the Windows Start menu, choose Settings, and then Control Panel.
  128. 2. Double-click on Add/Remove Programs.
  129. 3. Choose SoftQuad HoTMetaL PRO 4.0 Evaluation from the list.
  130. 4. Click on Add/Remove.
  131. 5. Choose SoftQuad HoTMetaL Site Maker Database Evaluation from the list.
  132. 6. Click on Add/Remove.
  133. 7. To re-install, follow the installation instructions again.

  136. Possible installation problems
  137. ------------------------------
  138.  
  139. Site Maker installer appears to fail
  140. ====================================
  141.  
  142. Sometimes the installer for SoftQuad Site Maker appears to fail or
  143. terminate abnormally. Each time that we have experienced this,
  144. the Site Maker files have still installed successfully. 
  145.  
  146.  
  147. Site Maker installation sometimes "hangs"
  148. =========================================
  149.  
  150. If the Site Maker installation does not terminate within 10 minutes:
  151.  
  152. 1. Interrupt the installation:
  153.     a. Type Ctrl+Alt+Delete.
  154.     b. Choose HoTMetaL PRO Eval Setup from the task list.
  155.     c. Click on End Task.
  156.  
  157. This will cause all files installed so far to be un-installed.
  158.  
  159. 2. Re-run the installer by running setup.exe. 
  160.  
  161. 3. At a certain point in the installation you will see
  162. a dialog box with the following prompt:
  163.  
  164.         "Setup will now invoke the Site Maker Installer 
  165.         to install the Site Maker - this is required for proper
  166.         functioning of the Information Manager.
  167.  
  168.         Please install the Site Maker now."
  169.  
  170. When you see this message, click on the No button.
  171. The HoTMetaL installation will continue to completion.
  172.  
  173. 4. Using Windows Explorer, go to the "sitemake" folder 
  174. (located in the folder containing the files that you downloaded), 
  175.  
  176. 5. Double-click on setup.exe in that folder to install the Site Maker.
  177.

  182. Installer fails on NT systems without 16-bit support
  183. ====================================================
  184.  
  185. If your PC is running Windows NT and 16-bit support has
  186. been removed, the HoTMetaL PRO installation program setup.exe
  187. will not run. In this case, see SoftQuad's Support Center
  188. (available from http://www.softquad.com) for an alternative installer.
  189.  
  190.  
  191. Installer sometimes fails to register DLLs and OCXs
  192. ===================================================
  193.  
  194. If the HoTMetaL installer gives you an error message indicating that
  195. it did not register the required DLL and OCX files, you can complete
  196. this step by running a script, as explained here:
  197.     - Copy the file fixocx.bat, located in the folder
  198.       containing the files that you downloaded,
  199.       to your Windows system folder (usually windows\system)
  200.     - Choose MS-DOS Prompt from the Programs menu
  201.     - Change directory to the system folder
  202.     - Run the script by typing fixocx.bat
  203.     - If any errors occur, open the script file with a text editor,
  204.       identify the lines that caused the errors (just look for
  205.       the OCX or DLL name that appeared in the error
  206.        message), and enter each of those lines individually at the
  207.       MS-DOS prompt.
